Apocalypse wins State Championship

Apocalypse, of Pompano Beach, went through the A Division bracket undefeated and beat top-ranked Value Pawn/Shut Em Down, of Tampa, 35-18, in the championship game to win the Sunshine State Games Adult Flag Football State Championship at Loyce E. Harpe Park on Sunday afternoon and finish the season with eight consecutive wins and a 14-3 record. It was reversal of last year's championship game when Shut Em Down defeated Apocalypse for the title.

Derrick Brown caught two touchdown passes, including one where he tipped the ball up to himself and ran it in for the score, as Apocalypse built a 20-6 halftime lead. Brad Corliss threw two touchdown passes including the final score of the game to Steve Davis. Halfback Brian Baer added a running touchdown and threw one as well.

"We were clicking on offense and defense," said Baer, the Apocalypse team captain. "We're undefeated in our last two tournaments and it's because we've had our full roster playing. At other tournaments this year, we've had a guy missing here and there. With our full team, we're pretty hard to beat."

Apocalypse, who entered the tournament ranked third, beat Reloaded 31-19 and seventh-ranked Xcelligent, of Orlando, 35-18 on Saturday. They returned to the field and defeated the fourth-ranked HORSEMEN, of Orlando on Sunday morning, 45-18 to reach the championship game.

"Credit must also go to our defense as well," said Baer. "They played well all weekend held all four opponents to three scores or less."

Miami's Most Wanted also went undefeated in the B Division and defeated the Palm Beach Knights 41-20 in the championship game to win the gold medal. Miami's Most Wanted defeated the FGCU Homewreckers, of Fort Myers, 33-27 and Largo's Hard Knox 32-14 on Saturday and beat Hope Chiropractic, of Palm Beach Gardens, 20-13, Sunday morning, to advance to the championship game.
