Sports in Florida combines
for a $16 billion industry that provides 400,000 jobs to citizens
of the state.
Florida's climate and environment enhance
the enjoyment of some of the best sporting events, tournaments
and attractions in the world. Take a look at the following
facts and figures and it will be hard to disagree that Florida
is the "Sports Capital of the World." |
- Florida boasts over 1,200 golf courses that play
host to over 55 million rounds annually.
- A 1997 visitor profile report by Visit Florida
found the state attracted 1,482,041 visitors that played golf
during their stay in Florida.
- Of these visitors, 702,287 stayed in hotels
and resorts for a total of 7,450,236 room nights. This resulted
in $216,261,226 in hotel room night revenue.
- Other figures showed that golfers provided
3,096,094 rental car days and spent $296,128,343 in restaurants.
- Decision-making in professional golf is
made in Florida as the PGA is headquartered in West Palm Beach,
the LPGA is headquartered in Daytona Beach and the PGA Tour headquartered
in Ponte Vedra Beach.
- Over 1,000 miles of coastline surrounding
the peninsula.
- 8,426 miles of detailed shoreline
(includes bays and sounds to the head of the tidewater
or a width of 100 feet).
- 7,710 natural lakes of 10 acres or
more, comprising three million acres of water.
- 12,000 miles of fishable rivers,
streams and canals; or 51,858 miles of flowing water.
- In 2007, Florida had over one
million registered vessels in the water.
- 2.8 million U.S. Anglers over the
age of 16 fished in the state of Florida in 2006.
- In 2007, Florida had over one
million boat registrations.
- Total economic impact from
recreational fishing was $7.5 billion and supported
approximately 75,000 jobs.
